Clare Johns Counselling

About me

Hi, I’m Clare.

Originally from the UK, I have enjoyed the beautiful Australian lifestyle for the past 17 years. I now live in Newcastle, NSW with my husband and two energetic young boys!.

I am passionate about helping and connecting with others. At Clare Johns Counselling, I offer a safe, compassionate space where you can be heard, reflect and reconnect. Together, we can explore your thoughts and feelings with empathy and understanding, helping you find clarity, calm, and confidence on your personal journey.

Life can sometimes feel like a constant balancing act — between responsibilities, relationships, and the quiet moments we rarely give ourselves. We all experience times when things feel a little too heavy, when the path ahead looks uncertain, or when we simply need someone to listen without judgement.

I believe that everyone deserves to be heard. Counselling isn’t about fixing you — it’s about creating a safe space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and experiences at your own pace. It’s a place where your story truly matters.

Through gentle conversation and compassionate support, we work together to make sense of what you’re feeling. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, low mood, loss, or life changes, therapy can help you reconnect with yourself and find new ways forward.

Sometimes, the first step is simply giving yourself permission to pause — to breathe, reflect, and talk. From there, healing and clarity can begin to unfold.

If you’re ready to take that first step, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you. Together, we can create calm, connection, and clarity — one conversation at a time.

  • Many people say, “I don’t even know where to start…” when trying to explain what’s going on for them. At times, it can feel overwhelming to make sense of your thoughts and emotions, let alone put them into words. You might not be able to point to anything clearly “wrong” in your life, yet still feel that something isn’t quite right. At other times, challenges across different areas of life can build up and begin to feel unmanageable. This can lead to pressure, stress, and uncertainty about what to do next.

Most of us want to live a fulfilling and balanced life, with space to enjoy the things that matter. General counselling can support you to:

    • Develop practical coping skills for life’s challenges

    • Identify, prioritise, and work towards personal goals

    • Create meaningful and lasting change in your life and relationships

How do I know if I need counselling?

Have you been feeling low, but not depressed? Or perhaps more on edge than usual, without clear anxiety? You may not be able to name exactly what’s happening, but you know you don’t feel like yourself.

Life can be challenging, especially when situations feel overwhelming, distressing, or outside your control. While talking to friends or family can help, it doesn’t always provide the clarity or direction you need. Counselling offers a supportive space where you don’t have to work things out on your own.

There’s a common belief that counselling is only for people experiencing severe difficulties. In reality, counselling can help with a wide range of concerns, and no issue is too small. Your wellbeing, experiences, and goals matter. General counselling provides a safe, non-judgmental environment to explore what’s happening for you and consider options for change.

Counselling supports you to identify and work through concerns that may include current challenges or past experiences affecting your thoughts, feelings, or behaviour. Some common reasons people seek general counselling include:

    • Relationship concerns (partners, family, or friends)

    • Navigating a relationship breakup

    • Career changes and work-related stress

    • Feeling stuck, lost, or lacking direction

    • Confidence and self-esteem concerns

    • Harassment or bullying

    • Burnout and fatigue

    • Financial stress

Often, it’s not just one issue causing distress, but a combination of factors that leave you feeling unsettled or overwhelmed. You may be struggling with how you see yourself, your relationships, or the direction your life is taking.

  • Counselling can be very effective in addressing a number of areas, such as :

    • Anxiety and mood disorders

    • Dealing with life’s stress and challenges

    • Grief and loss

    • Interpersonal conflict

Depending on your circumstances and preferences we can focus on a number of therapies, including :

    • Person Centred therapy

    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

    • Solution Focused Therapy

    • Motivational Interviewing

  • I want to sincerely acknowledge how difficult it can be to make the decision to pick up the phone and make that first call - to take that first step.

Reach out through my contact form or call me on 0415677328 to have a 10 minute, friendly chat to schedule our first appointment.
